In Wisconsin, USA, Dr Klaus Platz played a fundamental role in launching the immunosuppressive drug CellCept (Mycophenolate Mofetil), which is used to prevent the body from rejecting a kidney, liver, or heart transplant. He also established the pancreas transplant programme in Berlin, drawing on his experience in experimental pancreas and kidney transplantation in Wisconsin. Dr Klaus Platz helped to set up the living related kidney transplant programme in Kiel, as well as the combined pancreas/kidney transplant programme. Additionally, he was involved in the establishment of the small bowel transplant programme both in Kiel and Berlin. Dr Klaus Platz's academic achievements include the completion of a 'Summa cum Laude' level Doctoral Thesis at Albert Ludwig University in Freiburg, Germany. This is the highest educational level of distinction an academic can receive. His impressive experimental work was acknowledged when he received a Goedecke Research Award during his time at the university. Such studies have led Dr Klaus Platz's contribution to almost 200 individual publications internationally, and his delivery of more than 50 oral presentations at scientific meetings in English and in German. Dr Klaus Platz has also contributed to others' research in the medical field, co-ordinating research activities for medical professionals and training medical students since 1992. He is currently a member of a handful of medical organisations, such as the European Society for Organ Transplantation (ESOT) and the European Society for Surgical Research.
